CHESTER SPEAKS WITH YARRAM SECONDARY STUDENTS

August 14, 2009

Yarram Secondary College students have been encouraged to aim high and work hard.

During a recent visit, The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester spoke to students in years 11 and 12 about leadership and issues affecting young people across Gippsland.

“I enjoyed the opportunity to encourage the students to aim high and work hard to achieve their aspirations,” Mr Chester said.

“We need young people to understand the important role they can play in shaping the future and the opportunities that Gippsland can provide them whether they choose to start work immediately upon leaving school, take up a trade or study at university.”

Mr Chester said it was a great opportunity to hear how local youth feel about important local issues.

“It was great to hear from the about the issues that are concerning them,” Mr Chester said.

“One of the issues raised was lack of support for regional students who need to move to Melbourne to study at university.

“This has now been exacerbated by changes announced in the Federal Budget which make it harder for students to establish themselves as independents to receive Youth Allowance.

“The changes make it more difficult for students from regional areas to be able to afford to attend university.”

Students also discussed issues relating to street violence and the responsible consumption of alcohol along with State Government laws regarding car licences.
