CROOK TO HIGHLIGHT REGIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE NEEDS IN O’CONNOR

June 12, 2012

Nationals WA Federal Member for O’Connor Tony Crook MP has invited the Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Roads and Regional Infrastructure, Darren Chester MP, to visit the O’Connor electorate this week.

Mr Crook will travel with Mr Chester throughout Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Coolgardie and Esperance from Wednesday, June 13.

Mr Crook said he will be highlighting significant infrastructure projects in O’Connor such as PortLink, as well as discussing local issues with community representatives.

“Having Darren Chester visit the region highlights my relationship with the Federal Nationals and I welcome the opportunity to discuss key infrastructure projects important to my electorate.”

“The Nationals are working on a Federal Regional Infrastructure Policy, and PortLink would be an ideal project to be supported through such a program.”

The Federal Government has committed $2 million towards PortLink for the planning phase of the project.

Mr Crook and Mr Chester will also travel to Coolgardie to tour the facilities of Focus Minerals’ Coolgardie gold mine.

“Companies like Focus employ, train and up-skill many of my constituents, so I am really keen to show Darren first-hand the industry behind the Goldfields region.”

“The Carbon Tax and Mining Tax will heavily impact regional WA, including many companies within my electorate, and I would like Darren to hear these stories directly from the people being affected.”

Mr Chester said he looked forward to visiting O’Connor and learning about the unique challenges faced in regional Western Australia.

“When Tony Crook entered the Party Room, The Nationals made a commitment to work closely with Tony on regional projects.”

“My visit to the electorate of O’Connor follows on from the visit last week by my National Party colleague Hon John Cobb, Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Food Security.  I know many more members of The Nationals are keen to visit WA and see how we can deliver better outcomes to regional WA as an alternate government.”

Mr Crook said the visit from Mr Chester this week, and the visit from the Hon John Cobb MP, Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Food Security last week, demonstrated how his new role in the National Party Room had brought Western Australian regional issues into the spotlight.
