The campaign to extend Exceptional Circumstances (EC) drought assistance to the Latrobe Valley has taken a step forward, with news that the State and Federal Agriculture Ministers will fly in for a personal inspection this week.

The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester has been actively lobbying both governments to provide drought assistance to farmers in Glengarry, Yinnar, Callignee, Traralgon South and surrounding districts.

Latrobe Valley farmers were excluded from drought assistance when the State Government reviewed boundaries late last year.

“I invited the Federal Agriculture Minister to come and meet with the local farmers and gain a first hand understanding of the conditions they are facing,” Mr Chester said.

“Many of these farmers were able to access drought assistance last year and had their payments cut off late last year.

“I’m told that conditions are worse now than they were when the area qualified for EC.

“Obviously conditions have deteriorated further with many farmers losing pastures as a result of the bushfires.”

Mr Chester called on the State and Federal Agriculture Ministers to support his request for EC payments to Latrobe Valley farmers.

“Even if it is just for 12 months, to provide some relief while our local farmers get back on their feet,” Mr Chester said.

“The fact that they are coming here to the Latrobe Valley tomorrow and Thursday to review the conditions provides us with some hope that the previous decision will be reversed.”
