BAIRNSDALE STUDENT A ‘2012 YOUNG LEADER’

July 3, 2012

Bairnsdale student Elizabeth Newton is one of only two students from regional Victoria to be recognised by The Nationals as a 2012 Young Leader.

State Member for Gippsland East Tim Bull and Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester have presented Elizabeth with her prize, a cheque for $3000.

Elizabeth is currently undertaking a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Melbourne after completing high school studies at Gippsland Grammar last year.

The Nationals Scholarship for Young Leaders is run each year with recipients receiving a share of $5000 to go towards the cost of living away from home to complete tertiary studies.

The scholarship program is targeted at students who intend to return to a regional community after completing their tertiary studies. Special consideration is also given to regional students in hardship situations.

Mr Bull said it was encouraging that students such as Elizabeth wanted to return home after completing university.

“Elizabeth is a confident and well presented young lady who is clearly going places,” Mr Bull said.

“The scholarship will help Elizabeth to achieve her goals and it is pleasing she intends to return to a regional community where she will no doubt not only be a great professional asset, but also a terrific contributor to her community.”

Mr Chester, an active campaigner for greater support for students from regional areas who led the Independent Youth Allowance campaign, congratulated Elizabeth on her achievements.

“Elizabeth has a keen interest in helping to develop sustainable environmental practices that would work in conjunction with our region’s traditional industries such as timber harvesting, and commercial fishing,” Mr Chester said

“She has already proven that she is prepared to work hard to pursue her goals and I have no doubt that she would be a welcome addition back into our region after she has finished her tertiary studies.”

Applications for The Nationals Scholarship for Young Leaders 2013 will open in late 2012.
