More than 50 exhibitors will be on hand at the Australian Government Jobs Fair in Morwell on Friday to help facilitate new local employment opportunities, including for those affected by the closure of the Hazelwood Power Station and mine.

Member for Gippsland, Darren Chester MP, acknowledged the resilience and resourcefulness of locals and encouraged them to come along to explore future opportunities.

“Latrobe Valley has faced some tough periods on the back of industry shifts and the changing face of the local employment market, but we are a determined people and can see there are great opportunities for all of us ahead,” Mr Chester said.

“The people of Gippsland are committed and want to work, but it can be hard to know where to start. The Coalition Government is working with the community to find ways to keep local families in their home region with meaningful and fulfilling employment.”

Member for McMillan, Russell Broadbent MP, said the Jobs Fair was an important opportunity for local workers to find a new job or kick start a new career.

“I would encourage anyone with a need or even just an interest in finding new employment opportunities to come along to the Jobs Fair,” Mr Broadbent said.

“It’s a unique opportunity to network with potential employers and to get practical guidance and support to move into new areas of employment.”

The Gippsland Jobs Fair is part of a $3 million structural adjustment package to assist Hazelwood Power Station and Mine workers. The structural adjustment package is a key component of the Turnbull Government’s $43 million investment to support Latrobe Valley families faced with the impending closure of this major local employer.

Further on-the-ground support is available to workers in the region through an Employment Facilitator, who is working with local jobactive providers, employers and training services to ensure workers have the skills they need to re-enter the workforce and provide them with opportunities for retraining and further education.
