Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester today met new contractors who will operate essential services at RAAF Base East Sale.

The contractors, who started their tenure in November, will play a critical support role for the RAAF Base by providing security, repairs and maintenance, cleaning, catering and airfield operations.

Mr Chester said the new contracts were bringing business and employment opportunities to Sale.

“The RAAF has thousands of men and women in uniform who perform outstanding work every day, but there is also a team of dedicated contractors working away in the background to support them,” Mr Chester.

“Many of these contractors are locals who are proud to play an important role in the defence of our nation, ensuring RAAF personnel remain safe, are well-fed and can perform their jobs to the best of their ability.

“While much of their work is done behind the scenes, it is important we recognise the significant contribution contractors make to the Defence effort.”

Mr Chester also inspected works on the $185.6 million RAAF Base East Sale redevelopment project, which includes a number of major infrastructure projects.

“RAAF Base East Sale is undergoing a major transformation, which will further cement its place as an important component of the Defence training network,” he said.

Projects including the air traffic control complex, School of Air Warfare training facilities and 180-unit live-in accommodation are closer to completion. Other projects under construction include a new gym, flight line maintenance facilities, chapel and community centre and engineering service upgrades.

It is estimated that over a three year construction period, about 990 work opportunities will be created either directly or indirectly.
