KEEP GIPPSLAND AT FOREFRONT OF LONG-WEEKEND PLANS

June 8, 2012

The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester is encouraging people to keep Gippsland at their forefront of their long-weekend holiday plans.

Mr Chester said despite flooding affecting several parts of the region, local tourism operators were still open for business.

“While there has been a significant flooding event this week, Gippsland businesses are very keen to see visitors to the region,” Mr Chester said.

“The Queen’s Birthday long-weekend is traditionally a busy time of year with a number of people making the trip to various parts of Gippsland as they head to the snow, go fishing or simply relax and unwind.

“There are a wide range of activities and amenities on offer to suit families of all budgets and it’s a great way to support local tourism operators in light of this week’s flooding event.”

Mr Chester said the clean-up effort was well and truly underway in areas affected by this week’s flooding.

“Gippsland businesses are a resilient bunch and having been through this before they have already got on with the job of cleaning up so that they can get back up and running as quick as possible,” Mr Chester said.

“Local emergency services and volunteers have also been critical in assisting them to prepare and deal with flooding and are to be commended for their efforts.”

Mr Chester said anybody who had planned to visit Gippsland should check with their host accommodation before travelling to the region.
