Targeted assistance to boost the rural health workforce and improved mental health services are key features of the Coalition's health plan, according to Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester.

Mr Chester said The Nationals and Liberals would combine to provide $1.5 billion more for mental health services if they formed government after the Federal election on August 21.

CHESTER SUPPORTS DIABETES CLINICAL TRIAL PDF Print E-mail

A $45 million Clinical Trial Network for Type 1 diabetes in Australia would be established under a Coalition Government in partnership with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), according to The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester.

This week’s policy announcement coincides with Diabetes Awareness Week which is occurring across Australia.

Mr Chester has welcomed the Coalition’s commitment which would provide $35 million for the Clinical Trial Network, with JDRF providing a further $10 million.

DOCTORS INCENTIVE PROGRAM FAILS FIRST TEST PDF Print E-mail

Doctors from Melbourne are now able to receive the same financial incentive for moving to work in the popular coastal town of Torquay as they would for moving to work in Maffra, Heyfield, Rosedale or Yarram.

The financial incentives will be provided under the Rudd-Gillard Government’s new ‘General Practice Incentives Program’ which began on July 1. The program has already drawn heavy criticism from the Rural Doctors Association of Australia (RDAA).

The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester, who has been campaigning for additional government funding to attract and retain the rural health workforce, has joined the RDAA in calling for a review of the program.

HEYFIELD HOSPITAL SEEKING FUNDING TO UPGRADE SAFETY PDF Print E-mail

Heyfield Hospital is seeking government funding to ensure the safety of staff and patients during natural disasters by upgrading fire and power generation systems.

The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester recently visited the hospital to lend his support to the funding application under the National Rural and Remote Health Infrastructure Program (NRRHIP).

The hospital board are seeking $100,000 to install a new power generator and implement a new fire safety system.

CHESTER AND NORTHE DISCUSS RURAL HEALTH WITH AMA PDF Print E-mail

The need for local control over Gippsland hospitals and the importance of attracting and retaining doctors in the region were the key topics of discussion during today’s meeting between local MPs and the Australian Medical Association (AMA) Victorian President Dr Harry Hemley.

The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester and Member for Morwell Russell Northe stressed the importance of additional government funding to attract and retain the rural health workforce.

“The shortage of doctors in regional and rural areas is well recognised with up to 1800 new doctors required to meet current demand,” Mr Chester said.
