The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester is supporting a $50 million funding commitment to improve community safety by re-establishing the National Community Crime Prevention Program.

The program will support the crime-fighting efforts of local communities and the states with grants for security-related infrastructure including closed circuit television (CCTV).

Mr Chester said residents in several Gippsland and Latrobe Valley towns had expressed interest in securing funding for CCTV to reduce the incidence of anti-social behaviour.

$225,000 TO IMPROVE SAFETY AT LATROBE VALLEY TAXI RANKS PDF Print E-mail

$225,000 will be spent improving safety levels at night for local residents at taxi ranks across the Latrobe Valley in a move supported by the Member for Morwell Russell Northe and The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester.

The funding will be spent to install Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) at Seymour Street and Stockland Plaza in Traralgon and provide shelter, seating and complete road treatment at the George Street taxi rank in Morwell.

Mr Northe and Mr Chester have been vocal in their support for funding applications to improve safety in the region that have been put forward to both State and Federal Governments by the Traralgon CBD Safety Committee and Latrobe City Council.

The Latrobe Valley community will benefit from more police under a Victorian Coalition Government plan to revolutionise policing and public safety.

The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester welcomed his State Parliamentary colleagues’ promise to boost frontline police by 1600 in their first term of government.

Mr Chester said the $344 million plan will end chronic police shortages and restore public safety.

VALLEY FAILED BY LACK OF COMMUNITY SAFETY FUNDING PDF Print E-mail

The State and Federal Governments are failing to recognise increased levels of violence and anti-social behaviour in regional communities such as Traralgon according to The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester.

Mr Chester last week attended a meeting with the Traralgon CBD Safety Committee. The committee has been continually searching for government funding to assist in the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV), operation of a night-rider bus service and employment of security guards at taxi ranks.

He said despite repeated requests from the committee for government funding there has been no support forthcoming.

SURVEY BACKS NEED FOR COMMUNITY SAFETY FUNDING PDF Print E-mail

The Federal Government has been urged to restore funding to the National Community Crime Prevention Program (NCCPP) after a survey of Latrobe Valley residents found more than 90% of people were concerned about the level of crime.

The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said the community survey undertaken by his State colleague Russell Northe found that Latrobe Valley residents were overwhelmingly concerned about  community safety and wanted more police on the beat to combat anti-social behaviour.

More than 600 people responded to the survey with 92% of respondents indicating that they would like more police on the streets and 91% expressing support for tougher penalties on people found guilty of community alcohol-related assaults.
