COALITION COMMITS $10M FOR FIRE DETECTION SYSTEM |
August 9, 2010
$10 million would be allocated towards the establishment of an early fire detection system under a Coalition Government according to Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester.
This technology has been used in Europe and the US and has proven to be very effective. Early detection gives communities more time to evacuate an area should a fire start.
The selection of the system will be undertaken in consultation with the Victorian State Government, the Country Fire Authority (CFA) and local communities.

GREEN ARMY HAS A ROLE IN PRESCRIBED BURNING |
August 2, 2010
The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester says the Coalition’s proposed Green Army could play a key role in achieving higher prescribed burning targets recommended by the Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission.
Mr Chester said the Coalition’s plan to employ 15,000 people in a Green Army to undertake practical environmental work should include resources to meet prescribed burning targets when conditions are suitable.
“If the Coalition is elected on August 21, I will be arguing the case for a strong contingent of Green Army workers to be involved in all aspects of environmental work in Gippsland,” Mr Chester said.

REFLECTION ON THE ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF BLACK SATURDAY |
January 29, 2010
The one year anniversary of the Black Saturday and Boolarra fires represents an opportunity for Gippslanders to reflect on the tragic loss of life that occurred and to commit ourselves to continuing to assist in the recovery effort.
I have previously spoken in Federal Parliament of my absolute respect and admiration for the emergency services workers and all the volunteers who rallied together to serve their communities.
On a local level, we can all be proud of the way our communities united in the face of great adversity. If there is any positive to come from this tragedy it has been the incredible community spirit and resilience which has been demonstrated throughout our region.

TAX CHANGES TO HELP BUSHFIRE RECOVERY |
November 10, 2009
New laws to increase the amount of financial support available to farmers to rebuild after bushfires have been introduced into Federal Parliament. The new laws will also provide long-term support for orphaned minors in bushfire affected communities.
Speaking in support of the changes, The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester told Federal Parliament recovery in the Latrobe Valley was “very much a long haul” and the infrastructure upgrades would take a long time to complete.
“There may be a sense in the broader community that the recovery has finished now—that we can all move on now that the media interest has died down,” Mr Chester said.
