LOCAL ISSUES TO DECIDE GIPPSLAND POLL

August 16, 2010

The media coverage of the Federal election naturally focuses on the leaders of the two major parties but in Gippsland, it’s the local issues that matter.

During this campaign, I’m the only candidate who has released a plan for the future covering jobs for East Gippslanders, funding our local roads, better local health services and funding to improve safety in our communities.

This weekend, Gippslanders will have to choose which candidate they believe will stand up for our community in Canberra and make sure that our voice is heard on these issues and many more.

CRIME PROGRAM DESERVES SUPPORT

August 2, 2010

Every East Gippslander has a right to feel safe in their homes and walking the streets of our towns, but there have been several serious incidents in recent years which have undermined that confidence.

One of the most significant announcements in the first two weeks of the Federal Election campaign was the Coalition’s commitment to re-establish the National Community Crime Prevention Program (NCCPP).

The program was successfully introduced by the Howard Government and worked in partnership with local communities to tackle community crime through the installation of closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras and other practical initiatives. The funding was cut by the Labor Party and I’ve been lobbying on behalf of local communities to have the program reinstated.

STANDING UP FOR GIPPSLAND

July 19, 2010

Fans of Fawlty Towers will remember the comical line “don’t mention the war” and see some striking similarities with Julia Gillard’s opening sales pitch to the nation on the weekend.

The Prime Minister urged Australia to “move forward” more than 20 times during her speech on Saturday without once acknowledging the past. This obsession with air-brushing the Rudd-Gillard Government’s recent history would be almost comical if it wasn’t so serious.

By repeatedly asking Australians to move forward, Ms Gillard wants us to ignore the four tragic deaths and the houses which are still burning down due to the government’s incompetent handling of the home insulation program.

FUNDING NEEDED FOR PUBLIC INFRASTRUCTURE

July 5, 2010

The prospect of State and Federal elections over the next six months is an opportunity for East Gippslanders to demand their fair share of government funding for important local projects.

The important debates about health, education, aged care and transport infrastructure will naturally dominate the discussion but one area I would like to see focussed on is the level of funding for facilities on public land.

Over the past 15 years I’ve been involved in tourism marketing and promotion in our region and I have continually pushed the case for more funding to upgrade infrastructure such as boat ramps, jetties, picnic areas, walking trails and community playgrounds.

MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS NEEDS ATTENTION

June 21, 2010

This week’s resignation of the Chairman of the National Advisory Council on Mental Health is further evidence of the crisis in mental health services across our nation.

John Mendoza is the adjunct professor of health science at the University of the Sunshine Coast and the adjunct associate professor of medicine at the University of Sydney.

In announcing his resignation, Mr Mendoza directly criticised the Rudd Government for its lack of vision and commitment to an issue that affects millions of Australians. This week, Mr Mendoza wrote in the media about his concerns with mental health services, and I quote:
